Definition & Importance

Guardians of Global Heritage

The World Heritage Committee is a body of 21 UNESCO member states elected by the General Assembly that is responsible for implementing the World Heritage Convention, determining the use of the World Heritage Fund, and allocating financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It has the final say on whether a property is inscribed on the World Heritage List.

"The World Heritage Committee plays a crucial role in protecting our shared cultural and natural heritage for future generations through international cooperation and conservation efforts."

Key Aspects

Core Responsibilities of the Committee

Site Inscription

Evaluates nominations for new World Heritage Sites based on criteria of outstanding universal value, integrity, and protection/management.

Monitoring

Regularly reviews the state of conservation of listed sites and may place endangered sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Fund Allocation

Manages the World Heritage Fund which provides financial assistance to States Parties for protection and conservation projects.

Methodology

Decision-Making Process

1 Evaluation Process

Nominations are first evaluated by advisory bodies (ICOMOS for cultural sites, IUCN for natural sites) before committee review. The committee meets annually to make final decisions.

2 Decision Criteria

Decisions are based on strict criteria including outstanding universal value, integrity, authenticity, and adequate protection/management mechanisms.

3 Monitoring Framework

Uses reactive monitoring for sites under threat and periodic reporting (every 6 years) to assess conservation status of all listed properties.
